Borderline Personality Disorder
the first time i had chocolate, i fell in love
the sweetness melted against my tongue
chipped away at the enamel on my teeth
and left me hoping and searching for more
i discarded the meat, fruits, and vegetables
paying attention only to the confectionary goods
i collected from the grocery stores and markets
chocolate became part of my daily routine
i brushed my teeth with chocolate syrup
swooned over the sticky sap coating my mouth
i loved drowning in the sugar and sweet
i didn’t need other sustenance; i had found my destiny
two weeks later, i suddenly felt sick
i looked in the mirror, my chocolate-covered face
and realized what i had become
i collected the wrappers and boxes
grabbed clorox and scrubbed at the dried, brown residue in my bowls and plates
washed them 3 times and banished them to the dishwasher (just in case)
then, did the same with my teeth
scrubbed until i could only remember the taste of colgate
an hour later, i realized i couldn’t bear to live without chocolate
the next time i had chocolate, i fell in love
