Love Persevering

Todd Matson
Love Persevering
I have never
observed anyone
as loving. Her displays
of affection legendary in my
eyes – blowing sweet kisses to her
mom, dad, grana, grandpa, husband and
children no longer there, having outlived them
all, her love persevering through too many
premature deaths, unbearable griefs,
as auto accidents, house fires,
drownings, cancer and
dementia don’t just
happen to people in other
families. This is what unendurable
mourning morning after morning looks
like, as morning after morning you find her
kissing everyone she has ever loved and had the
nightmarish misfortune of outliving. Pay her a visit
and you will see her kissing them on cheeks, foreheads,
her husband on the lips, kissing them good morning,
kissing them goodnight, kissing the air, kissing
no one there, kissing beloved apparitions
overflowing from her heart into her
house, her love persevering,
her love persevering,
of sound mind, her
love persevering.
